Fence Calculator

Enter the total fence length and your post spacing to estimate the number of posts, sections, rails, pickets, and bags of concrete you'll need to build it.

Quick answer: Most fences use 8-foot post spacing, so a 150-foot fence needs about 20 posts, 19 sections, and roughly 2 bags of concrete per post.

Post count includes one per section line plus an extra at each gate. Picket count assumes a uniform width and gap; solid-board privacy fences use a zero gap. Plan about two bags of fast-setting concrete per post.

How it works

  1. 1. Measure the total linear feet

Walk the perimeter you want to enclose and measure the total length in linear feet, leaving out gate openings. Mark corners and any changes in direction. This total drives how much material you need.

  2. 2. Space the posts

Posts are typically set 6 to 8 feet on center, so divide your linear feet by the spacing and add one post for the final end. Corners, ends, and gates need their own posts. Closer spacing adds strength and material; wider spacing saves posts but can sag.

  3. 3. Count panels or pickets

For panel fencing, the number of sections equals the number of post bays. For picket fencing, divide the run by the picket width plus gap spacing to count pickets, plus rails between posts. The calculator estimates posts, panels or pickets, and rails so you can price the job.

Frequently asked questions

  • How far apart should fence posts be?

Most wood and vinyl fences use 6–8 foot post spacing. Closer spacing is sturdier and uses more posts; 8 feet is the common maximum for a standard panel.

  • How many pickets do I need?

Divide the fence length (in inches) by the picket width plus the gap between pickets. For a 5½-inch picket with a ¼-inch gap, that's about one picket every 5¾ inches.

  • How much concrete per fence post?

Plan about two 50 lb bags of fast-setting concrete per post for a typical residential fence. Taller fences and sandy soil may need more per hole.
