Final Grade Calculator
Enter your current grade, how much the final exam is worth, and the overall grade you want — and see exactly what you need to score on the final, plus the score needed for an A, B, or C.
Quick answer: Needed final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final's weight)) ÷ weight. With a 85% average and a final worth 20%, you need a 70% on the exam to finish with an 82% — and a perfect score gets you to 88%.
That's above 100% — the desired grade isn't achievable with the final weighted at 20% (barring extra credit).
Needed score = (desired − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with the weight as a fraction of the overall grade. A result over 100% means the goal is out of reach at this weight; a result at or below 0% means it's already locked in.
How it works
1. Enter your current grade and the final's weight
Your current grade is your average on everything before the final; the weight is how much of the course grade the final exam carries — commonly 15% to 30%, listed in the syllabus.
2. Set your target
Pick the overall grade you want to end the course with. The calculator solves for the final-exam score that gets you exactly there: (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.
3. Check what's achievable
If the required score tops 100%, the target isn't reachable with this final's weight — aim a grade lower. The A/B/C tiles show what the final needs to be for each common cutoff.
Frequently asked questions
How do I figure out what I need on my final?
Use the formula (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with the weight as a decimal. If you have a 78%, want an 80%, and the final is 25%: (80 − 78 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 86%.
Can I still get an A in my class?
Only if the required final score is 100% or less. With a 92% average and a 20% final, you keep your A with a 82% or better on the exam. If the math says you need more than 100%, the A is out of reach.
What if my class doesn't use weighted grades?
If the course uses total points instead of weights, convert: the final's weight is its points divided by the course's total points. A 200-point final in a 1,000-point course is a 20% weight.
